Bikram Yoga Questions

Bikram Yoga is practiced in a room heated 105 degrees with 40% relative humidity. By practicing in this controlled environment, you receive many benefits. The hot room warms your muscles. Warm muscles allow you to work safely and with more efficiency towards a deeper stretch, while also healing and preventing injuries.

Yes and Yes! Bikram Yoga classes are designed for beginners, and Bikram Yoga is for Everybody and for Every Body! Every element of the class from the dialogue to the mirrors to the 90-minute time frame allows you to move through the strategically planned sequence of postures in a meditative state. The repetition of each posture (twice) offers an exploratory approach that enables you to fully realize the benefits of each posture.

You will experience people of all backgrounds (abilities, ages, shapes/sizes) and experience levels in your class.

It’s not about doing the poses perfectly, it is about trying the right way. All you have to do is TRY and you will get results.

“You are never too old, never too bad, never too late, never too sick to start from scratch once again.” -Bikram

This is probably the most common question that Bikram Yoga teachers are asked. Flexibility (physical and mental) is the primary reason we practice yoga. A malleable body and a malleable mind help us to grow!

Absolutely, but it is more important that you arrive to class hydrated for a few reasons: 1) It takes about 30 minutes for water to absorb into your system, so it is best to arrive well hydrated and not rely on hydration during class. 2) filling yourself up with liquid then moving your body in all directions can cause you to feel queasy.

As often as you can. Frequency and consistent effort are two of the determining factors for how you feel and how quickly you see results.

Just like any other form of exercise, your progress is a function of the time and honest effort you give to your yoga practice. Immediate effects include improved sleep and more energy. Long term effects may include weight loss, improved flexibility, and an overwhelming sense of peace and calm in all areas of your life.

Commit yourself to work Bikram Yoga into your schedule at least two times per week. You will see changes in just a few short weeks.

Bikram yoga is a workout. And a work in.

Among the myriad of benefits, Bikram Yoga focuses on flexibility of the spine. The 26 postures are designed to build strength through the whole body, especially in the spinal column. The beginners postures work through every range of motion, increasing flexibility. In the beginning you will take it a little easy but you will quickly start to notice increased range of motion and reduction in pain in your daily life.  Be sure to share more about your mobility with your instructor so that we can advise you accordingly.

The answer is simple. Lay down on your mat. Even the most experienced practitioners take breaks during class. It is the highest form of self care. We ask that you do your absolute best to stay in the room for the duration of the 90-minute (or 75-minute) class. This is for your own well-being. If you must leave the room, please signal to the teacher that you are okay.
